Sources and Research Method
Official ice hockey sources and the method used to distinguish universal concepts from league-specific rules.
Primary sources
Formal rules should be checked through the governing body for the competition. Our main reference points include:
- International Ice Hockey Federation rules, regulations and guidelines
- Hockey Canada equipment fitting resources
- USA Hockey rulebook and resources
- The current rulebook, bulletins and equipment requirements issued by the reader’s league or national association
Method
We first identify the common concept—for example, offside controls legal entry into the attacking zone. We then avoid treating implementation details as universal. Articles are written in original language, cross-linked to related concepts and reviewed for unsupported expertise, medical promises and unsafe instructions.
Why professional rules are not the default
Professional leagues are visible, but most readers play or watch under different rules. The site therefore uses international language and calls out variations rather than building every explanation around one commercial league.
Dates and versions
Official documents change. A linked rulebook may be replaced after this page is published, so the governing organization’s current rules page is the final reference.
